　　江戶時代某町，一下級武士不滿上級食言，遂揮刀砍死長官，引起一片混亂。事后，中年武士中村主水（藤田まこと飾）成為代罪羔羊，遭到降職減薪處罰。不久，年輕俊美的長官奧田右京亮（真田広之飾）走馬上任。與此同時，一群落魄浪人組成的團伙對當地百姓居住地進行大肆騷擾，混亂之中，一老者不幸身亡。偶然閑蕩于此的主水事感蹊蹺，暗中展開調查。而老者的女兒為給父親報仇，不惜出賣身體賺錢聘請能殺掉浪人的勇者。在此期間，主水結識了帶著兩個孩子的浪人文七（千葉真一飾）。兩人不打不相識，主水拜托文七調查右京亮的出身，結果發現這個新任長官和浪人集團有著千絲萬縷的聯系。                                    　　背后的陰謀由此漸漸浮出水面…國外三級
