趙巖松,陳大偉,王玉璋,劉大偉,魏琦根據徐貴祥同名小說改編。 鐵匠的兒子石平陽帶著父親的囑托參軍來到炮兵部隊。他的一股沖勁，受到營長莊必川的喜愛，老班長李四虎更喜歡石平陽不服輸的勁頭。李四虎是技術尖子，他對新戰士訓練十分嚴格，新戰士進步很快。他把石平陽視作接班人，要在自己退伍之前把經驗全部傳授給石平陽，甚至以故意裝病，讓石平陽獨立完成訓練課目。石平陽進步很快，年終還榮立了三等功。和他一起入伍的女兵張媚對他也另眼看待。教導隊招收骨干，進教導隊就能報考軍校，成為軍官。營長擔心比武缺了石平陽影響成績，因此改派與石平陽一同入伍的王北風去了教導隊。機會得而復失，石平陽有些想不通。父親去世了，指導員讓他回家料理，但他走到半路，想起父親的囑托，毅然返回連隊。李四虎復員了，石平陽接任班長，他把老班長的好傳統全部繼承下來，愛兵、愛炮、愛部隊，技術精益求精。同時入伍的王北風和張媚進了軍校，石平陽仍然當班長。排長調走了，石平陽任代理排長，這時，他入伍已有八年。團里為了留住他，讓他準備報考軍校。就在這時，新戰士劉發展一封雖事出有因但嚴重失實的告狀信，使他又失去了上軍校的機會。石平陽要復員了，副團長莊必川舍不得他離開，從車站把他接回，團黨委特別決定把他留下。石平陽又回到排里，他對劉發展更嚴格、更耐心訓練和要求，使劉發展深感內疚。幾年后，參謀王北風到部隊檢查工作，見到石平陽仍是上士，不免生出許多感觸。在集團軍的軍事演習中，石平陽指揮火炮群的準確射擊，令首長和指揮員們贊嘆不已。石平陽多年操縱的火炮由新式火炮取代了，他雖有些戀戀不舍，但他立即和戰友們開始學習掌握新的火炮，迎接新的挑戰。不久，石平陽被破格提拔為中尉連長。
