馬群,王蘇婭,浦克,李俊海,耿曉璐,徐守莉,康保民,歐陽儒秋,張百爽,吳波,朝魯,于蓮芝,魏啟儀,紀恒普,胡樂佩,江帆黨的十一屆三中全會后,年邁體衰的市委書記梁羽,向市委提出申請,準備退居第二線。可梁羽的妻子楊青蔚,卻被市委人事變動的消息搞得心神不安,唯恐自己的丈夫職務變動后成為徒有其名的牌位,她為此四處活動,探聽消息。梁羽早已對妻子插手公事的做法不滿,曾特意定了"約法三章",借此限制她的越軌行為。可是近來,他發現楊青蔚仍假借自己的名義干預公事,搞不正之風;還耳聞目睹小女兒塞北依賴他的特權,貪圖享受,不求上進。為改變妻子、女兒的特權思想,梁羽決定開個家庭會議,幫助教育她們,并宣布自己的離休決定。不料,剛露風聲,馬上遭到妻子的強烈反對,她又哭又鬧,梁羽百般勸解無效,家庭會議不歡而散。楊青蔚為阻止丈夫離休,連夜來到市委第一書記肖朋家,無理要求市委不接受梁羽的離休報告。肖朋佯裝厲色,據理相譏,使楊青蔚敗興而歸。梁羽為擺脫妻子的糾纏,與長女燕北悄悄地離開家,到水利工地視察、采訪。他一邊視察水電站的建設情況,一邊對市委書記的接班人、電站總指揮遲新方傳授經驗,做好讓賢準備。梁羽突然離家,急壞了楊青蔚,她表面上不動聲色,實際上繼續奔波。當活動連連受挫后,楊青蔚又生一計,打電報請來了母親和哥哥,企圖借他們一臂之力,扭轉敗局。梁羽的兒子梁晉和燕北積極支持父親離休讓賢,他們背著母親偷偷地把外婆和舅舅接到肖朋家。梁羽和肖朋向老人講真情,楊母堅決支持女婿梁羽。伴隨家庭的風波,社會也向梁羽施加種種壓力。棉紡廠廠長李景德認為梁羽已經離休,無利可圖,便強迫兒子允公與燕北解除婚約。楊青蔚為阻止丈夫離休,揚言要離開他。年邁體衰的梁羽,不堪過分刺激,心臟病突然發作。楊青蔚看到丈夫心臟病復發,開始悔恨自己的行為。在眾親朋的幫助和教育下,她認識了錯誤,全家人愉快地支持梁羽光榮離休。

The story follows the wanderings of a hero through the situations of survival. People wait for the Ark to arrive and rescue them while their habitat falls apart. Delving deep into the dusty and long abandonded vaults of b-cinema in search of lost gems always leaves me with a bittersweet taste. On one hand the discovery of unexpected gems where no one would think them possible is a rewarding experience. On the other hand though it makes one wonder how many of these remarkable low-budget oddities, personal love affairs of directors never quite famous and now all but forgotten, have almost forever slipped from memory? n any case what we have here is a little post-apocalyptic gem from Poland that is really better than it has any right to. The dystopian near future of O-BI, O-BA finds a group of survivors of the nuclear war that ravaged the Earth inhabiting an underworld concrete bunker and biding their time as they wait for the mysterious Ark, an air ship of some kind that will come and save them. The Ark proves to be an elaborate hoax, carefully designed to give hope to the malnourished and desperate denizens of the bunker, while in the meantime the dome that separates their miserable existence from the nuclear winter outside is slowly caving in. What first striked me about the movie is the design of the bunker and the depiction of the survivors. The survivors are gaunt, filthy and terrible-looking penitents, dressed in rags and aimlessly wandering the neon-lit halls of the bunker like automatons. The bunker is a rundown, seedy place, with bright neon lights peering from all sides like the eyes of malignant beasts. On one hand it is a slightly 80's depiction of the dystopian future but the movie never stoops down to MAD MAX cheese. Instead it combines biting political satire with the bleak outlook of a world with no future, black comedy with barbs on apathy, religion and power. The survivors, for example, are fed some kind of flour dropping from a tube that hovers in the air - later on we discover the food supervisor uses books and the Bible itself as filler for this meagre meal. There are many such short symbolic touches, perhaps not life-changing or faith-restoring, yet playful, clever and inspired. One thing is for sure; O-BI, O-BA is not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi schlock. It overcomes its modest budget with creativity and has genuine artistic aspirations both from a writing and directing perspective. My opinion is that it should have been filmed in black and white instead of colour though. The director uses atmospheric light and shadow to great effect and it would have registered even better in stark black and white. The blue-green neon on the other hand outstays its welcome after a while. Just a minor gripe in an otherwise solid b-movie with its heart set in all the right places. Imagine a less bleak THE ROAD (Cormac McCarthy) being injected with the satire and humour of DR.STRANGELOVE and you're getting there. See it if you can find it.
