警長吉恩家中關系緊張，他只能從情婦貝蒂那兒求得慰藉。貝蒂的前夫直升飛機駕駛員斯托米一直蒙在鼓里。另一對夫婦非尼根關系雖好，但他們的愛子凱西在生日前天卻遭遇車禍死在醫院。汽車司機埃爾的妻子多倫是女招待。多倫對埃爾的酗酒惡習深惡痛絕，一氣之下不慎開車撞倒了菲尼根的兒子凱西。隔壁鄰居路易絲一邊給小孩兒喂奶，一邊給提供SQ電話服務，這就是她的工作。她丈夫杰里對此十分反感，反而看上了女提琴師，年輕的佐伊。佐伊一直不嫁人，整日逼問母親她父親當年為何無故自殺。佐伊認為母親有不可告人的事，郁郁而自盡。布什一家與凱澤一家一起去公園野餐。比爾和杰里拋下他們妻兒，去追趕兩個騎著自行車的青年女子。他們好容易趕上了她們，想和她們搭訕。就在這一剎那，一場大地震開始了，正駕著直升飛機在城市上空盤旋的斯托米目睹了這一奇觀。
