黨的十一屆三中全會后,年邁體衰的市委書記梁羽,向市委提出申請,準備退居第二線。可梁羽的妻子楊青蔚,卻被市委人事變動的消息搞得心神不安,唯恐自己的丈夫職務變動后成為徒有其名的牌位,她為此四處活動,探聽消息。梁羽早已對妻子插手公事的做法不滿,曾特意定了"約法三章",借此限制她的越軌行為。可是近來,他發現楊青蔚仍假借自己的名義干預公事,搞不正之風;還耳聞目睹小女兒塞北依賴他的特權,貪圖享受,不求上進。為改變妻子、女兒的特權思想,梁羽決定開個家庭會議,幫助教育她們,并宣布自己的離休決定。不料,剛露風聲,馬上遭到妻子的強烈反對,她又哭又鬧,梁羽百般勸解無效,家庭會議不歡而散。楊青蔚為阻止丈夫離休,連夜來到市委第一書記肖朋家,無理要求市委不接受梁羽的離休報告。肖朋佯裝厲色,據理相譏,使楊青蔚敗興而歸。梁羽為擺脫妻子的糾纏,與長女燕北悄悄地離開家,到水利工地視察、采訪。他一邊視察水電站的建設情況,一邊對市委書記的接班人、電站總指揮遲新方傳授經驗,做好讓賢準備。梁羽突然離家,急壞了楊青蔚,她表面上不動聲色,實際上繼續奔波。當活動連連受挫后,楊青蔚又生一計,打電報請來了母親和哥哥,企圖借他們一臂之力,扭轉敗局。梁羽的兒子梁晉和燕北積極支持父親離休讓賢,他們背著母親偷偷地把外婆和舅舅接到肖朋家。梁羽和肖朋向老人講真情,楊母堅決支持女婿梁羽。伴隨家庭的風波,社會也向梁羽施加種種壓力。棉紡廠廠長李景德認為梁羽已經離休,無利可圖,便強迫兒子允公與燕北解除婚約。楊青蔚為阻止丈夫離休,揚言要離開他。年邁體衰的梁羽,不堪過分刺激,心臟病突然發作。楊青蔚看到丈夫心臟病復發,開始悔恨自己的行為。在眾親朋的幫助和教育下,她認識了錯誤,全家人愉快地支持梁羽光榮離休。
她離開丈夫與兒子,也離開穩定的律師工作,在泳池、露天咖啡廳與私人公寓自在游走。以寫作寄托生活,對兒子的愛未減半分,與丈夫也親如摯友,直到那日,她向丈夫吐露與女性的親密關系,完美生活旋即化為一場幻夢。在失去監護權后,她不得不在機構間穿梭,為了見兒子一面奮力一搏,卻不知這樣的困境,何時能走到盡頭?

Following her mother’s death, manga artist Soriya travels to her ancestral home in Phnom Penh, with hopes of reconnecting with her distant family and using the visit as inspiration for her work. All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.
