在民政局工作的陳二小（陳佩斯 飾）和舅舅（魏宗萬 飾）是新舊兩代白事工作者。陳二小的紅白理事會提倡白事新辦，響應法律號召推行火葬；他舅舅是位老資格的大了，堅決捍衛土葬風俗，與此同時向喪家放高利貸從中漁利。陳母（趙麗蓉 飾）年逾古稀，老腦筋一時無法轉變。她生怕兒子將自己燒 掉，加上娘家哥哥煽風點火，陳母立逼著二小立下土葬的字據。 壽辰前夕，二小的姐姐（丁嘉麗 飾）和姐夫（倪大紅 飾）送來一口大紅棺材祝壽，這讓陳母的心事徹底了結。風水先生算出陳母須在農歷九月期間躺在棺材里去閻王爺處報名，同時為了檢驗二小的孝心，陳母和哥哥想出假死的餿主意，由此也引出一連串惹人發笑的荒誕鬧劇……

In a quiet residential area, four domestic robots suddenly decide to take their masters hostage in their own home. At the voting for the Law for animal protection, biggest controversy is considering bull fights. Sonja (Judita Frankovic) is from Zagreb, an inveterate activist fighting for animal rights.
